Ways Kids Can Conserve Energy

Now that you know how to teach your kids about conserving energy, there are some ways to help them put what they’ve learned into action. Teach them a few new tips each week and then help them implement the ideas into their daily routine. With this in mind, here are some ways your kids can conserve energy:

  • Maintain your thermostat at 78°F and wear thin, light-colored clothes instead of depending on running your air conditioner at a higher temperature.
  • Turn on ceiling fans to circulate the cool air throughout your home.
  • Take a lukewarm shower in the summer so you don’t make the air humid.
  • Keep hot air out of your home by closing your shades, drapes, and blinds.
  • Use grills, microwaves and counter top appliances instead of turning on your stove or oven.
  • Wash laundry at night in cold water and hang them up to dry.
  • Turn your pool’s filter off when not in use, especially overnight.
  • Turn off all appliances and lights that you’re not using – even if they’re programmable.
  • Plant shade trees around your home.
  • Turn off the A/C and open your windows when it’s cool outside.
  • Use daylight instead of artificial light.
  • Only run your clothes and dish washers when they’re full.
  • Take a short shower, not a bath.
  • When it’s hot outside, serve cold foods and drinks instead of baking, cooking, and making coffee.
  • Don’t repeatedly and unnecessarily open refrigerators and freezers.
  • Exercise outdoors because too many people in one room creates a lot of heat.
